Classroom project
More than 1000 students and still counting!
An average Hungarian high scool student would meet the first (and last) time in his life with Jewry when he learns about the Holocaust. This creates a false picture that Jews are "just" victims of a war and not a living community with culture, tradition, who were living in Hungary long before the Holocaust and they are living here 70 years after, too. We adopted our performance Recipes for Survival into a special classroom history class project.
We created a 45 minutes long version of the play with keeping the 3 actresses, and changing the set design we can have a full show in 45 minutes, so in the first part of the class we can see the 20th century in front of our eyes in a female Jewish point of view. In the second part of the class we discuss the differences and the similarities between what we saw (personal history) and what we can read in the official educational books (official state history).
We wish to achieve with this living history class that the high school students will understand that behind the words of the schoolbook are real people. And those people are not always leaders of a nation or country or army, but everyday heroes. They are making history in kitchens, working places and livingrooms. Students have an easy way to identify themselves with the hero of the performance, who is, in our case, a Jew. This will allow the students a completely different and deeper understanding of their country and the Jewish community lives in it.
This is a free event for high schools.
